Director's statement

About the play, how and why.

Shakespeare has been done so many times before that it’s almost impossible to do something entirely original and yet still have an enjoyable performance that’s accessible to all. This is a problem for most directors wanting to do Shakespeare and has led to the rise of many modern day interpretations of Shakespeare; 10 Things I Hate About You, She’s The Man and even The Lion King. Based on the classic and much loved A Midsummer Night’s Dream, our production brings to life the tale of 4 misbegotten Oxford Students, struggling to make sense of the drunken academic haze around them.

The events take place at St Catherine’s Ball where (to the delight of many) the theme of the night is Asian culture. Going all out on the beautiful Indian decorations whilst serving exotics foods such as Turkish delight and sushi, the ball turns out to be a huge success up until the point where our play begins. To introduce you to this atmosphere, we’ve carefully designed an extravagant and decadent stage which brings to life the already superb acting of our players.

Featuring some of the upcoming and already established actors in the Oxford drama scene you may notice their names as featured in their publicised success in last term’s cuppers. Needless to say, the quality of this production is superb and you are strongly advised to book tickets in advance to avoid disappointment. If you come to any play at all this year, let it be this one. I hope to see you all here at the St John’s Auditorium; it will certainly be “A Night To Remember!”
